When Gustav II Adolf had Gothenburg built-in 1621, there were turbulent times in Sweden. The new city would secure the area at the estuary and keep an important trade route open. In 1640, the War College in Stockholm decided to build a "cloth house", a warehouse for cannons, vehicles, uniforms, and other military equipment. The royal architect Simon de la Vallée is believed to have been responsible for the drawings, which, however, were simplified in the final proposal. The six-story brick house was built in two stages during the years 1642–1654.
